Best Time of Year to Get Permanent Makeup in Markham: 10 Seasonal Considerations
Sun, heat, allergies, weddings, travel — by Sam Liang
TL;DR
Markham's seasonal calendar affects SPM outcomes more than most clients realise. The honest answer to 'best time of year' is: fall (mid-September through November) is the optimal window for most clients, followed by late winter (February–March), then spring, then summer last. The 10 factors below cover sun exposure / SPF discipline, indoor central heating skin dryness, seasonal allergy peaks, wedding season scheduling, travel windows, and the specific Markham micro-climate (humidity, lake-effect winds). Booking against the seasonal grain is not catastrophic — it just adds friction. Booking with the grain reduces variables.
Every Markham SPM consultation includes a quick seasonal review — when is your appointment relative to weddings, travel, season changes, and high-UV months. These factors do not change whether SPM works; they change how much friction your aftercare period carries. The 10 factors below are the seasonal checklist we walk clients through before locking in a date.
- 1
Fall (Mid-September to November) — The Optimal Window for Most Clients
Mid-September through end of November is the lowest-friction window in Markham. UV index is moderate, ambient temperature is comfortable (no extreme heat sweat, no extreme cold central heating dryness), seasonal allergies are typically resolved by mid-September, wedding season has wound down, and most major holiday gatherings are still 6+ weeks away. Touch-up at week 6–8 lands in late October to early December — still comfortable. About 35% of Sambrow annual SPM bookings cluster in this window for these reasons.
Mid-September to November is the default 'just book it' window for Markham SPM.
- 2
Late Winter (February–March) — Second-Best Window
February and March are also good — UV index is at annual low, no major allergies, and the touch-up at week 6–8 lands in April / May before high-UV summer. Trade-off: indoor central heating creates very dry air which can extend the healing flake phase slightly. Solution: humidifier in bedroom set to 40–50% during healing (covered in the aftercare guide).
Late winter is fine with a $40 humidifier; otherwise indoor air dryness adds 2–3 days to healing comfort.
- 3
Spring (April–May) — Workable with Allergy Awareness
Spring works for clients without seasonal allergies. For clients with spring allergic conjunctivitis (itchy / watery eyes), book outside the peak (before late March or after early June). Allergic eye rubbing during the 14-day eyeliner healing window lifts pigment significantly. Spring wedding scheduling concentrates here — if you have a May or June wedding, book SPM 10–12 weeks before so the touch-up has healed.
Spring works if allergies are not yours, and if you book around wedding scheduling.
- 4
Summer (June–August) — Possible But Friction-Heavy
Summer is the most friction-heavy window in Markham. High UV (UV index 8–10 on sunny days) means rigorous SPF and avoiding direct sun for 14 days is harder. Outdoor weddings, pool days, beach trips, and patio season all push against the aftercare protocol. Air conditioning indoor / direct sun outdoor temperature gradient stresses the healing surface. Not impossible — just plan around it: book early morning sessions, commit to sun avoidance for the 14-day window, and skip the cottage / patio for 2 weeks.
Summer SPM works but requires disciplined sun avoidance and aftercare; consider postponing to fall if your summer plans involve heavy outdoor time.
- 5
Wedding Timing — Initial Session 10–12 Weeks Before the Date
For your own wedding: initial SPM session minimum 10 weeks before the wedding (12 ideal). This sequence: Week 0 initial → Week 1–2 acute healing → Week 4 settled → Week 6–8 touch-up → Week 10 fully healed result for photos. Booking within 8 weeks risks looking 'mid-healing' in photos; booking within 4 weeks lands directly in peel phase. Worst possible timing: 3 weeks before — Day 18 ghost phase. We routinely decline bookings inside the 8-week wedding window.
- 6
Travel Considerations — Plan Around Day 14, Not Day 1
Domestic flights (under 4 hours): Day 5+ acceptable. International flights / long-haul: Day 10+ acceptable. Tropical / beach destinations with significant sun exposure: Day 21+ minimum, and bring rigorous SPF + a wide-brim hat. The 14-day window with no swimming, sauna, or sweat applies to vacation activity. The honest take: do not book SPM in the 4 weeks before a tropical vacation — defer until you return.
- 7
Holiday Season (December) — Avoid Late November Through Mid-December
December has its own friction set: holiday parties, alcohol-heavy social events, family gatherings with photo expectations, and travel. The 14-day aftercare ban on alcohol is particularly hard in late November / December. Touch-up sessions in early-mid December are fine for clients who had initial work in October. New bookings in December typically deferred to mid-January for cleaner conditions.
- 8
Lunar New Year and Chinese Holiday Considerations
For Markham's Chinese clients, Lunar New Year (typically late January / early February) is a meaningful timing factor. Many clients want fresh-looking SPM for family gatherings and photos but underestimate the 14-day aftercare commitment during a family-heavy season. Recommended: complete initial session before mid-December for full settle by Lunar New Year, OR defer to mid-February after celebrations. Booking 3–4 weeks before Lunar New Year is the worst timing window — Day 14–21 ghost phase will coincide with peak photo-taking.
- 9
Touch-Up Timing Relative to Initial Session
The 6–8 week touch-up timing means your seasonal planning needs to account for two sessions, not one. Initial in fall → touch-up in late fall / early winter (fine). Initial in late winter → touch-up in spring (fine, watch for allergies). Initial in early summer → touch-up in mid-late summer (sun avoidance harder). Initial in late summer → touch-up in fall (good). Map both sessions on the calendar before committing to the initial date.
- 10
Maintenance Touch-Up Timing — Year 2+
Maintenance touch-ups at month 18–24 can be timed more flexibly than initial sessions since the healing is simpler. Most Sambrow maintenance clients align their touch-ups to seasonal preferences: end of summer (refresh for fall season), late winter (pre-spring), or early fall (winter wedding season prep). Annual rhythm rather than calendar-driven scheduling.
The honest Markham seasonal ranking for SPM: fall best, late winter second, spring third (with allergy awareness), summer last. Wedding season adds 10–12 weeks of pre-planning. Travel adds 14–21 day buffer windows. Indoor central heating in deep winter (December–January) adds minor flake-phase friction that a humidifier resolves. None of this changes whether SPM works — it changes how comfortable your aftercare experience is. Book with the grain when possible; book against it when life requires, just with realistic preparation. Sambrow consultations include seasonal review by default — bring your calendar to the booking call.
Frequently Asked Questions About SPM Seasonal Timing
Is it true I should avoid SPM in summer because of sun? +
Avoid is too strong — but plan around it. Summer SPM is doable with disciplined sun avoidance for 14 days, daily SPF from Day 15, and no beach / patio / outdoor wedding in the healing window. If your summer involves heavy outdoor time, fall is genuinely better. If your summer is mostly indoor (work, AC, occasional patio), summer is fine.
Can I get SPM right before a vacation? +
Depends on the vacation. Mid-September Italy trip: fine if you commit to SPF and hat. December Caribbean trip: defer until you return — direct tropical sun in the first 21 days post-SPM significantly degrades the result. Indoor / city vacation: fine after Day 7. Discuss your specific trip at consultation.
My wedding is 5 weeks away — can I still book? +
No, we decline this window. Day 30 post-SPM is the peak photo-unfriendly time — ghost phase has just ended, true colour is emerging, but evenness is not stable yet. Either book for the wedding (10+ weeks before) or defer SPM to after the wedding.
What about during Diwali / Eid / other cultural celebrations? +
Same principles as wedding season — events with heavy photo expectations need SPM completed 10+ weeks before. We accommodate Markham's diverse cultural calendar; mention your specific holidays at booking so we can recommend optimal timing.
Does Markham's specific weather affect SPM more than Toronto? +
Modestly. Markham has more residential central heating in winter (drier indoor air) and slightly more pollen-heavy spring (north suburbs surrounded by green space). Both are easily managed with humidifier and antihistamine respectively. Otherwise the seasonal rhythm is essentially identical to GTA-wide patterns.
If I book in winter, do I need to do anything special for SPF? +
Yes — winter SPF discipline is the most-skipped aftercare item. Snow reflects 80% of UV upward onto the face. Daily SPF 30+ from Day 15 is non-negotiable year-round. The 'I don't need sunscreen in January' assumption is the leading cause of premature fade in Markham winter-bookings.
Can I do SPM during major life events like pregnancy or recovery from surgery? +
No — these are medical timing concerns separate from seasonal. Pregnancy: defer until 6 months postpartum and weaned. Surgery: defer 4–8 weeks post depending on surgery type. These rules take precedence over any seasonal timing preference.
How far in advance should I book my SPM appointment in Markham? +
For fall (peak season): book 6–8 weeks ahead. For other seasons: 3–4 weeks ahead usually sufficient. Last-minute bookings (within 1 week) sometimes available for short-notice cancellations but cannot be planned around. If your timing matters (wedding, vacation), book 8–10 weeks ahead to lock the date.
