TL;DR

Semi-permanent makeup results depend equally on the artist's technique and your aftercare. This guide walks you through 24-hour and week-one care for microbladed brows, semi-permanent eyeliner and Tokyo Lip Blush; what's normal vs abnormal during scabbing; how different skin types affect retention; when to book a touch-up; and long-term sun-protection habits — everything Markham and Greater Toronto (GTA) clients need to keep their results looking their best. The first 24 hours determine pigment retention more than any later step: keep the area dry, avoid heat and friction, and apply only the aftercare balm you were sent home with. A touch-up at 2 to 3 months balances colour and longevity. All Sambrow services are bilingual (English and Mandarin Chinese) at our Markham, Ontario studio, founded by Sam Liang after years of Tokyo training.

What Is Semi-Permanent Makeup?

Semi-permanent makeup (also called cosmetic tattooing or micropigmentation) is the technique of depositing specialised pigment into the junction between the epidermis and upper dermis. Unlike traditional tattoos, the pigment stays in the shallow layers of skin and fades gradually with natural cell turnover, typically lasting 1 to 3 years.

Common services include brows (3D hyper-realistic brows, powder/Ombré brows), eyeliner (upper and lower lash enhancement) and lips (Tokyo Lip Blush, lip liner). The healing timeline differs slightly between services, but the core aftercare rules are the same: keep it dry, avoid sunlight, don't pick scabs, and protect against UV long-term.

Why Does Aftercare Determine Your Final Result?

Pigment sits at the epidermal-dermal boundary. In the first two weeks, your skin moves through inflammation → scabbing → new epidermis formation. Aftercare during this window directly determines pigment retention — the same artist's work can retain 80–95% of colour with good aftercare, or drop to 50–60% with poor aftercare.

Proper care also stabilises the shape, reduces infection risk, and extends how long your results last before a touch-up is needed.

First 7 Days · Strictly Avoid

These behaviours directly disrupt pigment retention, delay healing or increase infection risk. Avoid them completely during the recovery window:

  • ×Soaking or prolonged water exposure on the treated area
  • ×Picking, scratching or rubbing scabs
  • ×Active skincare containing acids (AHA / BHA / retinol) or alcohol
  • ×Swimming, hot tubs, saunas or hot yoga
  • ×Direct sun exposure, tanning beds or long outdoor time without a hat
  • ×Any makeup or unapproved product on the treated area

The First 24 Hours: Step-by-Step

In the first 24 hours, your skin is in its most sensitive inflammatory phase — the golden window for pigment to settle. Follow these 5 steps strictly:

  1. 1

    Keep It Dry

Avoid water on the treated area. Cleanse the rest of your face with a damp cotton pad, working around brows, lips or eyes. Lip clients: use a straw for drinking and rinsing.

  2. 2

    Do Not Touch

Don't rub or touch the area to prevent bacterial contamination and pigment migration. Sleep on a silk pillowcase to minimise friction.

  3. 3

    Blot Lymph Gently

If lymph fluid weeps, blot in one direction with a sterile cotton swab. Never wipe back and forth or press hard.

  4. 4

    No Sweating

Skip intense workouts, hot yoga and saunas for 24 hours. Salt in sweat can lift pigment out of the fresh wound.

  5. 5

    No Makeup

No cosmetics on the treated area for at least 24 hours — including foundation, concealer, brow pencils and lipstick — to avoid contamination and infection.

Week-One Care: 6 Essential Steps

Week one is the critical window for pigment stabilisation and natural scab shedding. Light scabbing, flaking, dryness and tightness are all normal. Follow these 6 steps consistently:

  1. 1

Apply a Thin Layer of Ointment

2–3 times daily, apply a very thin layer of Aquaphor, Vaseline or your artist's recommended balm — like a 'transparent veil'. Too much will suffocate the scab and slow healing.

  2. 2

    Avoid Soaking

No swimming, hot tubs or baths this week. Shower with lukewarm water and keep the stream off the treated area. Lean back or ask for help when washing your hair.

  3. 3

    Let Scabs Fall Off Naturally

Scabs appear around day 3–7 and shed on their own. Never pick, scratch or rub with a towel — doing so lifts pigment and can cause patchy loss or tiny scars.

  4. 4

    Strictly Avoid Sun

UV rays break down pigment bonds (especially reds and oranges). Wear a wide-brim hat or sunglasses outdoors; do not apply sunscreen or any chemical product on the treated area until fully healed.

  5. 5

    Pause Active Skincare

Keep acids (AHA / BHA / salicylic / retinol), exfoliants and high-dose niacinamide away from the treated area for at least 14 days to protect the pigment layer.

  6. 6

Eat Light, Limit Alcohol & Spicy Food

Spicy food and alcohol promote local inflammation and slow healing. Hydrate well and eat vitamin-C-rich foods to support repair.

* Full healing usually takes 7–14 days. Colour goes from dark → 20–40% lighter after scabs shed → final stable tone. This progression is completely normal — be patient.

Brows / Eyeliner / Lips: How Aftercare Differs

The three main semi-permanent services heal on slightly different timelines. Here's what matters most for each:

Semi-Permanent Brows (3D / Ombré)

Healing takes ~7–10 days. Expect light scabbing and flaking. Be especially careful when rinsing your face; sleep on your side (not face-down) or use a U-pillow to protect the brows.

Semi-Permanent Eyeliner (Upper / Lower)

Healing takes ~5–7 days. Mild swelling may appear in the first 24 hours. No contact lenses for at least 5 days, no mascara or lash extensions, and do not rub your eyes.

Semi-Permanent Lips (Tokyo Lip Blush / Liner)

Healing takes longer, ~10–14 days, with three stages: darker colour → dryness and peeling → lighter settled tone. Keep lips hydrated, drink through a straw, and avoid spicy, citrus and hot foods. Clients with cold-sore history should ask about antiviral medication pre-treatment.

During Scabbing: What's Normal vs What's Not

Normal Signs (no need to worry)

Is it normal for the colour to look very dark after scabbing?

Completely normal. For the first 1–3 days the colour appears darker than the target shade — this is pigment sitting at the surface alongside the scab. Once scabs shed, colour lightens by about 20–40%, and the final stable tone emerges over 2–4 weeks.

Is peeling and flaking a sign of failure?

No. Fine scabbing and flaking from day 3–7 is the skin's normal repair process. The area may briefly look patchy or 'missing' after flaking — don't worry. Once new skin fully regenerates, the pigment will re-emerge evenly.

Is mild itching normal?

Light itching is a normal healing response (new skin growth). Don't scratch — you can press gently with a clean cotton swab for relief. If itching comes with visible redness or rash, it could be an allergic reaction — contact your artist.

Why does the colour look 'gone' after scabs shed?

This is the normal 'ghosting phase'. Scab shedding takes away surface pigment, and new skin covers any residual pigment with a thin 'veil' that looks faded. Around week 3–4, as the new epidermis cycles, colour re-emerges close to the final result.

Warning Signs (contact your artist or a doctor immediately)

If any of the following occurs, do not self-treat — contact your artist or a medical professional right away:

  • !Redness or swelling worsens or spreads beyond 48 hours post-treatment
  • !Persistent yellow or green discharge, with foul odour
  • !Severe pain or throbbing that doesn't subside
  • !Fever above 38°C (100.4°F), chills or swollen lymph nodes
  • !Visible bleeding continues more than 7 days after treatment
  • !Widespread blisters, rash or allergic reaction around the treated area

* In Markham or anywhere in the GTA, contact Sambrow first for guidance, or visit the nearest walk-in clinic if symptoms are acute.

Long-Term Maintenance: Make Your Results Last

Once healed, daily habits directly determine how long your colour lasts. These are the long-term rules for extending retention:

  • Wear sunscreen daily: UV (UVA / UVB) breaks down pigment bonds, especially red and orange tones. Apply SPF 30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen over the area once fully healed; use SPF 50+ for outdoor activities.
  • Avoid chemical peels and laser: AHA peels, IPL, laser pigment removal and strong exfoliation accelerate pigment metabolism and can shift tone. Always tell any skincare provider you have semi-permanent makeup.
  • Use a gentle cleanser: Choose a pH-balanced, sulfate-free, non-soap cleanser to minimise daily abrasion on the pigment layer.
  • Stay hydrated: Well-moisturised skin holds pigment longer — especially for lips.
  • Limit saunas and steam rooms: High heat and humidity speed up pigment breakdown; frequent use will noticeably shorten retention.
  • Reduce friction: Sleep on a silk pillowcase and avoid tugging at the area during cleansing or makeup removal.

How Skin Type Affects Retention

Retention is closely tied to skin type. Understanding yours helps you build a smarter touch-up schedule:

Oily Skin

Fast cell turnover and higher sebum spread pigment out faster. Touch-up every 9–12 months; powder / Ombré techniques tend to hold better than crisp hairstrokes.

Dry Skin

Slower turnover means more stable retention — often 18–24 months. Great canvas for 3D hairstroke brows. Focus on hydration during healing.

Combination / Normal

Standard 12–18 month cycle, most forgiving of all technique styles, and the easiest skin type for achieving natural-looking results.

Sensitive Skin

Healing can take slightly longer with brief redness. A patch test is recommended pre-treatment; avoid active skincare and physical friction during recovery.

How Often Do You Need a Touch-Up?

Semi-permanent makeup is not a one-time treatment. Pigment fades with natural cell turnover, so periodic touch-ups keep results at their best. Watch for these signs that it's time to revisit your artist:

  • Noticeable lightening or patchy gaps; lines look blurred
  • Tone shift (brows turning orange/red, lip colour losing saturation)
  • Uneven or asymmetric shape in brows, eyeliner or lip colour
  • 12–18 months since your last session — time for preventive annual maintenance

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How many days after brow tattoo can I wash my face?+

Avoid the brow area completely for the first 24 hours. For the next 7 days, cleanse the rest of your face with a damp cotton pad, keeping water off the brows. Once scabs fully shed (around day 7–10), you can return to your normal face-washing routine.

Is it normal for the colour to look darker during scabbing?+

Yes, completely normal. Colour looks darker for the first 1–3 days, then lightens 20–40% after scabs shed. Around week 3–4 you enter the 'ghosting phase' before the final stable tone settles in.

How long does semi-permanent makeup last?+

Generally 1–3 years. Oily skin retains for about 1 year; drier and combination skin can last 2–3 years. Daily sun protection, lifestyle factors (sauna, swimming, acid skincare) and individual metabolism all affect retention.

Can I get semi-permanent makeup if I have sensitive skin?+

Most sensitive-skin clients can — a patch test is recommended before treatment, and please disclose all skin conditions when booking. Healing may take 2–3 days longer, with strict avoidance of active skincare and friction during recovery.

Are there any things I should avoid before getting semi-permanent makeup?+

In the 24–48 hours before treatment, avoid alcohol, caffeine and blood thinners (e.g. aspirin). Treatment is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or within 6 months of stopping Accutane (isotretinoin). Disclose all current medications, skincare treatments and allergies.

How often do I need a touch-up?+

Standard recommendation is every 12–18 months. Oily skin: 9–12 months. Dry skin: 18–24 months. Your artist's assessment of fading and tone should guide the exact timing.

What's the difference between Tokyo Lip Blush and traditional lip liner?+

Tokyo Lip Blush, inspired by Japanese and Korean techniques, creates a sheer, dewy, naturally graduated 'no-makeup-makeup' lip. Traditional lip liner focuses more on sharp contour. The two can be combined — Sambrow will recommend the best approach based on your lip shape, skin tone and preference.

Does a touch-up have to be done by the original artist?+

Strongly recommended, to preserve consistent tone, shape and technique. Different artists use different pigment systems, and switching can lead to colour blending issues or shape drift. If you must switch, share your original treatment details with the new artist upfront.
